NORTHWEST VIEW OF EAST DUMMERSTON, VERMONT "SNOW GARDEN"
SITE IN THE SUMMER OF 1999
All photographs below on this Web Page were taken by 11 year
old BRCA/Hope LA-USA Project "Snow Garden" Staff Volunteer
Kahdeem Person, and were taken February 11 & 13, 2000 at
the East Dummerston VT. Snow Garden Demonstration Site as
part of his Home School Project. His mother Ahmada "Nefer"
Person served as the BRCA/Hope LA-USA Project Assistant Project
Director during the duration of this Demonstration.
The
"Snow (All Winter) Garden" Demonstration was featured
in an article written by Steve Seitz published by the "Brattleboro
VT. Reformer Newspaper" March 4-5, 2000.

NEVER USED AT THE EAST DUMMERSTON, VT. "SNOW GARDEN"
DEMONSTRATION SITE IN PHOTO TAKEN 2/13/2000
A. THE PROBLEM:
1. There is a need for the BRCA/HOPE LA-USA PROJECT, INC.
(HLAUSAP) to demonstrate the Sustainable Agro-Forest (SAF)
Technology in a practical way that meets the needs of the
Windham County Vermont Community. Windham County has two vital
food cooperatives in Brattleboro and Putney, a large wholesale
food cooperative, a farmers' market and successful organic farms
and gardens. Yet there is a need to address the large amount
of California and other non-Vermont grown foods imported year
round into Vermont, especially during Winter. Other temperate
area snow country sections of America share this problem.
2. Vermont as a "Republic" alongside the original
American Thirteen Colonies has a history of hundreds of years
of traditional cattle and dairy farming, forest tree farming,
maple sugar farming and field crops. Today's Vermont family farm
economy is stagnant and forest products economy limited by environmental
concerns. The outdoor skiing resort and tourist industry dominates
the Vermont economy in the winter. The Vermont family farm and
forestry lifestyles face continual threat of extinction. Rural
areas all over America share this problem.
3. The fledgling Windham County Vermont home school movement
lacks an "Alternative Sustainable Technology Resource Center"
that reflects the superiority of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle
and utilizes computer based multi-media Internet applications.
4. There is a need to demonstrate in Windham County Vermont
the potentials of Snow Gardening or "full winter"
food production. The more organic horticultural products produced
locally the greater become the holistic community benefit, security
and service indices. Other temperate area snow country sections
of America share this problem.
5. There is an epidemic of Nutritionally Related (NR)
Diseases and Syndromes [including heart disease, most cancers
(especially colon, stomach, breast, liver, pancreatic, prostrate,
ovarian, cervix, womb and skin), obesity, arteriosclerosis, arthritis,
hypertension, diabetes and stroke] aggravated by environmental
pollution; that can best be prevented and treated with health
seeking modalities including ones based on Nutritional
Herbology; i.e. using largely locally grown organic nutritional
plant foods and herbs, culinary herbs and spices and nutritional
hygiene to help prevent, control and cure such NR Diseases
and Syndromes.
B. THE SOLUTION

VERMONT "SNOW GARDEN" DEMONSTRATION SITE
It is proposed that a "Sustainable Lifestyle School
Resource Center" Model called the SUSTAINABLE LIFE SCIENCE
VIRTUAL SCHOOL (SLSVS) and an all winter VERMONT "SNOW
GARDEN" DEMONSTRATION be implemented by the Hope
LA-USA Project (HLAUSAP), Inc. and its networks.
In so doing two objectives will be pursued as follows:
# 1.) to implement a "Sustainable Lifestyle School Resource
Center" Model using a computer based multi-media curriculum
based upon the HLAUSAP'S already developed, tested and award
winning SUSTAINABLE
LIFE SCIENCE CURRICULUM (SLSC); and
# 2.) to demonstrate the superiority and relevancy of the HLAUSAP'S
Sustainable Agro-Forestry (SAF) Technology via a "Snow
(All Winter) Garden" using the same "passive solar
mini-greenhouse" technology successfully demonstrated by
the HLAUSAP and its Hope Brooklyn New York Project
in Brooklyn NYC, NY during the 1998-99 Winter.

C. DESIGN
The success of the Sustainable Agro-Forest
(SAF) Model's Passive Solar Mini-Greenhouse Technique
is based on its simple, self-regulating, holistic and thus totally
Sustainable Design; outlined in component detail as follows:
1. DEEP PLANTING BED 2
foot deep to 3 foot deep installed directly in the soil without
wood frames and thus not to be confused with a "raised
bed", using the "Bastard Trenching" Digging Method;
i.e. double dug (garden) oat triple dug (Orchard & Forest
applications); i.e. Double Dug (Garden) or Triple Dug planting
beds with surrounding 1 foot wide irrigation trench; and as used
in the Vermont "Snow Garden" Demonstration 5
foot wide by 20 foot long for a 100 square foot or 200 to 300
cubic foot earth component ___ acting additionally as an earth
"solar heat sink" capable of an average 15 degrees
warmer bed or inside mini-greenhouse soil temperature than the
outside soil temperature.
NOTE: See component 2 below for bed installation orientation
specifications.
2. PROPER SOUTHERN SOLAR ORIENTATION
of the DEEP PLANTING BED oriented lengthwise east
to west to get full winter passive solar heating sun; with ideally
unobstructed southern solar exposure from trees or other natural
and man made structures.
3. MINI-GREENHOUSE made
of hoops from 3/4 to 1 inch PVC pipe at 20 foot lengths across
the width of the Deep Planting Bed; reinforced with 3
"duct tape" secured PVC spines along the reinforced
length of the DEEP PLANTING BED along its center and sides;
and with the glazing (solar collector) material being 6 mil opaquely
transparent polyethylene plastic.
4. "VELCRO" TRAP DOOR
using ideally 2 inch "Velcro" stripping placed
someplace on the north side of the MINI-GREENHOUSE; easily
made by cutting out a 2' X 2' square opening in the north side
glazing and "Velcro" strip fitting the opening's circumference.
This opening is closed with a now removable "VELCRO"
TRAP DOOR made from another square piece of 6 mil polyethylene
plastic measuring 2'2" X 2'2" with "Velcro"
Strip fitted along its circumference.

LEFT IN PHOTO TAKEN 2/11/2000
5. WATER STORAGE of
minimally 25 gallons for a 100 sf PASSIVE SOLAR MINI-GREENHOUSE,
ideally colored "black" with food dyes in 5 gallon
containers or pails with at least one water storage unit without
a lid or top for humidity self-regulation and frost damage control
___ acts as a water "solar heat sink" and humidifier.
6. MULCH minimally
4 inches of properly ground recycled plant material via shredder-grinder
recycled into humus topsoil as the earthworms daily consume
part of it _ that acts as a "solar blanket" and as
a soil amendment ingredient for humus topsoil.
7. MAINTENANCE "SNOW GARDENING"
composed primarily of using an industrial quality straw broom
keeping the snow fall off the PASSIVE SOLAR MINI-GREENHOUSES
especially during solar collection hours on those days of significant
sun exposure, and the repairing greenhouse polyethylene damage
with clear packaging tape.

D. BUDGET
Each 100 sf Passive Solar Mini-Greenhouse can be made
with local hardware store materials for $65 or $0.65/sf.
E. PERFORMANCE
The Passive Solar Mini-Greenhouse #4 outfitted with
a 2 inch "Velcro" Trap Door performed perfectly
and is photo featured below showing healthy Green Kale and
Collard plants.

Of note is the 2 year old Collard plant shown below
that has survived 2 Vermont winters; i.e. the 1998-1999 winter
in a simple clouche, and now this winter of 1999-2000
in Passive Solar Mini-Greenhouse #4.
